A principal must ensure that his/her school is a safe, healthy, and non-threatening place where teaching and learning can take place.

The support of the superintendent. A superintendent that works with the board. Without this support nothing else matters. If the superintendent is afraid of or unable to work with the board you can forget change.

The best support (leadership) a can offer is a positive construction of real solutions to classroom challenge. Customized skills acquisition training and support while improvements are being made set both an excellent example of teaching and development of trust. .The latter two are, of course, keys to being a quality classroom teacher

The principal must create and sustain an environment where teachers use data to drive their instruction. This requires the principal to provide training and resources for teachers 1) to assess their students through on-going data collection, 2) analyze the data to change their teaching , and 3) to continue to evolve as student needs dictate. And, all this must be done in an environment that is created by the principal... so teachers are not threatened by the change but are empowered and encouraged in their pursuit of teaching so that all children (not just some) learn.

A principal must ensure first and foremost, teaching for learning happens in all classrooms. The environemnt must be created towards making the school a learning organization inthe true sense of the word.
