ASCD Express Calls for Submissions

ASCD Express is looking for short, 600–1,000-word essays on the theme "Building Positive Classrooms." The theme description is below, and guidelines for submissions are here. Send us your submissions by Tuesday, September 30.

Building Positive Classrooms: New teachers entering the classroom often have the least preparation when it comes to classroom management. But do such skills have to be acquired only after years of painful on-the-job learning? What approaches should new (and experienced) teachers use to engage and direct students in a positive atmosphere that lays the groundwork for student achievement? This issue will discuss best practices for planning and organization and, more important, for fostering understanding and meeting the needs of children and teens to create positive classrooms that inspire student learning.

I teach head start in Tennessee, we are in a public school system. Postive discpline or behavior managment is what we use. I have a fish bowl drawn on poster board with blue for water attached is velcor. Each student has their own fish and when I catch them being good I tell them to put their fish in the bowl. Above the fish bowl is "Caught Being Good". They enjoy it and at the end of the day they get a sticker for having their name in the bowl.
