1 in 50 Children Homeless, Study Says

A recently released and controversial study says that 1 in 50 U.S. children are homeless. This frightening statistic has people wondering how to keep these kids in school and, more importantly, how to get them off the streets and into a healthy and safe environment. Federal laws are in place that require school districts provide transportation and guarantee enrollment in public school systems, but the plight of being homeless adds its own difficulties. There may have been as much as a 16% increase in homelessness among children in the 2007-2008 school year. Florida, Kentucky, and Georgia were among states with the highest rates of homeless children.

Although the study points out a major problem, some are arguing that the numbers are skewed and don't take into account that many of these students in fact do have homes and are living with relatives and friends. Despite the argument that many of the children may have roofs over their heads, it is shocking and saddening to hear that so many children are put in such a dire situation, one in which a worsening economy surely will not help.

What can communities do to ensure homeless children are given shelter and a proper education?
