Organizing Turnaround Schools

The United States has ambitious plans to turn around the lowest-performing schools in the nation, including the roughly 2,000 dropout factories that produce more than half of the countries dropouts. How are plans for those schools progressing?

ASCD Express is looking for short, 600 to 1,000-word essays on the theme "Organizing Turnaround Schools." Guidelines for submissions are here. Please send us your submissions by December 17, 2010.

We welcome articles that show how school leaders are laying the groundwork for changing school culture and setting up staff and students for successful teaching and learning. Articles may focus on the narrower aspects of a school's comprehensive plan (e.g., teacher hiring or professional development, new paradigms for staffing, scheduling, and budgeting) or classroom management and creating a culture of high expectations.
